"Live Green" Tips for the Workplace
You can even help keep our air clean while you’re at work. Here are a few "green" tips:
Promote "Air Awareness Week" at Your Business! Spokane Clean Air and National Weather Service have created a pre-packaged toolkit to help local businesses promote "Air Awareness" at their facility. The toolkit contains a flyer (PDF), sample messges (PDF), green cleaning recipes (PDF), and a coloring contest (currently under development.)
Pack a Lunch! Shorter trips actually create the most pollution. Bring your lunch to work, that way you can avoid making the extra mid day trip home or to a restaurant, saving gas, time and air quality.
Out of Office Meetings? Share a Ride! If you attend meetings outside the office, try carpooling with co-workers or other people attending those meetings. It will save you money on gas, reduce traffic congestion and help clear the air.
Reduce Waste and Save Some Green ($$$) Businesses can save money by reducing the amount of waste they generate. When there is less waste being burned at the Waste to Energy plant, that means cleaner air for all. Business waste assessments are offered to Spokane County businesses free of charge and can range from sending a packet of information outlining waste reduction programs or a free consultation. For more information, visit Spokane Regional Solid Waste System.
Choose Commute Alternatives! Ask your employer about alternatives to drivng to work alone. Many employers in Spokane County support transportation alternatives, such as riding the bus, carpooling or working from home. For more information about commute options in Spokane, click here.
Got Old Electronics? Many businesses replace computers and other electronic items regularly. Don't throw these items in the trash! Many of the components in electronics are recyclable. Some computers can even be rebuilt and donated to schools. For more information call the Recycling Hotline, 625-6800 or visit Spokane Regional Solid Waste System.
What's the Air Like? Air quality affects how you live and breathe. Like the weather, it can change from day-to-day, or even hour-to-hour. Knowing what the current and forecasted air quality conditions are will allow you to plan your outdoor recreational and physical activities. There are three ways to keep up with air quality conditions.
- Find it on this website, from the "Current Air Quality" icon on our homepage.
- Call the 24-hour Air Quality Hotline, which is updated hourly, at 477-2571.
- Sign up for our free e-mail notification. We'll email you daily air quality conditions.
