Frequently-Asked Questions - Air Quality

Q:   How good Is Spokane’s air quality?

A:   Great news! In August 2005, Spokane was officially declared in attainment of all federal air quality standards. This came after decades-long efforts to improve air quality.  The three most prevalent air pollutants in our ambient air are carbon monoxide, fine particles (smoke/dust) and ground-level ozone.

The Air Quality Index calculates pollutants and assigns the value to a category: good, moderate, unhealthy, hazardous, etc.  In 2007, here's how Spokane measured up:

300 days were "Good" days, with an Air Quality Index of 0-50
65 days were "Moderate" days, with an Air Quality Index of 51-100.

That means "0" days of unhealthy air quality! Keep up the great work, Spokanites! For more information about our air, click here.

Q:   Where are the air quality monitors located?
