Travel Green - Pollution Prevention Tips
Find Another Way! If you ride the bus, carpool, bike or walk to work one out of five days, you'll reduce your gas usage by 20%. That saves you money and helps reduce traffic congestion and pollution. There are lots of incentives if you can get your workplace signed up for the County's Commute Trip Reduction program.
Care for Your Car! Regular vehicle maintenance means a cleaner running engine. By keeping up on oil changes and tune-ups, your car will run better, and you'll reduce tailpipe emissions.
Protect Your Health! Reduce your exposure to harmful gasoline vapors. When refueling your vehicle: 1. Step back from the nozzle to avoid breathing fumes. 2. During summer refuel in the evening, when there is less gasoline evaporation. 3. Consider purchasing gasoline at stations with vapor recovery nozzles.
Walk this way!
Walk Score is a new free web tool that allows you to find out how walkable your neighborhood or worksite is. If you are looking for a new place to live, you can check to see how walkable different communities are. Living and working in areas that are pedestrian friendly allows you to leave your car at home, saving you money on gas and reducing emissions.
Pump 'Em Up! By keeping your vehicle's tires properly inflated, you can save up to five cents a gallon on gas. Check your tires monthly, inflate them when needed, and your car will run efficiently, reducing gas waste and tailpipe emissions.
How much does transportation cost?
Transportation usually costs more that we think. The Center for Neighborhood Technology based in Chicago developed Abogo, a new web tool that figures out a rough estimate of transportation costs and transportation impacts of where you live.
Plan Your Day! A little planning goes a long way to save time, money and the air! Simply combining your errands into one, efficient trip will do. Take a shopping list to avoid a repeat trip to the store, and call the store ahead of time to make sure they have your item(s) in-stock.
Turn It Off! Idling your vehicle gets you nowhere fast. If you're idling for more than 30-seconds, please turn off the engine. Here's the facts on idling: 1. Idling consumes 1/2 to 1 gallon of gas per hour. 2. Excessive idling causes your engine’s components, including cylinders and spark plugs, to wear prematurely. 3. Childrens’ asthma symptoms increase as a result of car exhaust.
If you are a parent or volunteer at a school, you can help implement an award-winning No Idle Zone program at your school. Click here for details.
Shop Smart! If you're looking for a new or used vehicle, shop smart. Look for vehicles that get high miles per gallon, which will save you money on gas, and reduce air pollution. Visit www.fueleconomy.gov to compare different vehicles emissions and fuel efficiencies.
