Mow Down Air Pollution
in July and Win
!

 Did you know?

  • 40 million lawn mowers consume 200 million gallons of gasoline each summer.
  • Gasoline-powered garden tools emit 5% of the nation's air pollution.
  • Emissions from gasoline-powered equipment contributes to the creation of ground-level ozone—a hazardous air pollutant.
  • Ozone is our main air quality concern during summer. Most of the ozone-forming emissions come from many small sources, spread over a wide area.
  • Click here to see a short video on how ozone is formed.

There are a variety of ways you can help reduce air pollution this summer, see list below.

Ways you can help clear the air this summer:

  • On 90+ degree days, hold off using gasoline-powered yard equipment until evening, or on a cooler day.
  • Consider electric or manual-powered yard and garden tools when it's time to replace your gas-powered equipment.
  • Use a gas can that is easy to handle and use a funnel spout with a stop device to prevent overfilling.
  • Store gasoline in a tightly-closed container, in a cool, dark place. Keep at ground level to reduce the risk of falling and spilling.
  • Refuel your vehicle after 5 p.m.
  • Avoid over-filling your vehicle's gas tank.
  • Keep tires properly inflated.
  • Combine errands for fewer automobile trips.
  • Bike, walk, ride the bus or share a ride.
