Transportation Pollution Prevention Details for "Doing Our Share for Clean Air" Business Recognition Program

To qualify for Level Two of Spokane Clean Air's Business Recognition Program, a business must implement clean air practices in three out of five pollution prevention categories, of which transportation is a category.

Motor vehicles are the largest source of hazardous air pollution in our state.  When businesses look at ways to reduce costs, protect the environment and recruit and retain employees, transportation policies can have a positive impact.

  • Reduce vehicle miles traveled by your employees to and from work.  For example, participate in the county Commute Trip Reduction program and promote alternatives to driving to work alone.  Your business can set up subsidies and protocols to encourage employees to leave their car at home; teleworking, employer sponsored bus pass subsidies, preferential parking for carpoolers and vanpools, and flex hours.
  • Businesses throughout Washington are making it their business to be idle free.  With gas prices at record highs, it’s more critical than ever to obtain maximum fuel efficiency.  Implement a No Idle policy for your fleet vehicles.  Post No Idle Zone signs near loading bays and other locations at your facility where idling commonly occurs.  No Idle Zone signs are available from Spokane Clean Air for about $30 each.
  • When it’s time to replace vehicles in your fleet, investigate your options (efficient combustion engines, gas-electric hybrid cars and trucks).  New technologies allow greater gas mileage and reduced tailpipe emissions.
  • Improve fleet vehicle maintenance.  A well-maintained vehicle gets better gas mileage, emits less air pollution and has a longer life.  All great reasons to set up a regular maintenance schedule for fleet vehicles.
