What is Residential Yard & Garden Debris?

Residential yard & garden debris (garden trimmings, tree clippings, lawn rakings, dry leaves and needles) originates on maintained, improved area* of residential property (land immediately adjacent to a residence) and burned on such land by the property owner and/or any other responsible person. For unimproved acreage beyond your "yard area," click here to learn about silvicultural debris burning.

*maintained/improved area - an area within 30 feet of a residence, that often consists of a lawn that is cut and watered regularly. The area may have a few trees, shrubs, or other vegetation planted as part of a designed landscape around the house or outbuilding.  

Who can burn Residential Yard & Garden Debris?

Only residents
who live in outlying areas of Spokane County, including outside the No Burn Area and outside the 13 incorporated cities and towns and their urban growth areas may burn.

    Outside these 13 cities/towns and their Urban Growth Areas:
    Airway Heights, Cheney, Liberty Lake, Medical Lake, Millwood, Spokane, Spokane Valley, Deer ParkFairfield, Rockford, Spangle, Latah, and Waverly.
  • Outside Fairchild Air Force Base

When can eligible residents burn?

During an eight-day Spring-only season. Dates for 2008: April 4-7, 11-14

Delegated Yard and Garden Debris Burning Programs
Some fire districts in Spokane County have requested and obtained delegation of outdoor burning programs.  If you reside within one of the following jursidictions, contact them directly for information about obtaining a permit for outdoor burning: Fire Districts 2, 5, 11, 12.

Choose Alternatives to Burning
Free Chipping and Composting Event!  The Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency sponsors two "Chipping and Composting" events in the fall and spring.  

The Spring 2008 event on April 12 is being sponsored by ABCO Wood Recycling. It will be held in North Spokane County, at Fire Station #49, off Hwy 395 and Monroe Rd, 10 am - 3pm. For information on other types of outdoor burning programs and rules, click here.
